Lash Extension Aftercare: Educating Your Clients for Longevity

Lash extensions are one of the most in-demand beauty treatments today, but their lasting power doesn’t just depend on the application process. Proper lash extension aftercare plays a crucial role in maintaining the health of the natural lashes and the longevity of the extensions themselves. As lash artists, one of the most valuable services you can offer (besides flawless lashes) is education. Helping your clients understand how to care for their new lashes ensures better retention, happier customers, and more referrals.

Whether you’re newly certified or an experienced lash technician, knowing how to guide your clients through aftercare is essential to building a strong, reputable lash business.

A great lash artist doesn’t just apply lashes—they teach you how to wear them beautifully.

Why Lash Extension Aftercare Matters

Poor aftercare is one of the most common reasons for premature lash loss. Clients may blame you when their extensions fall out too quickly, but often, it’s down to incorrect home care. That’s why educating your clients about lash extension aftercare is not just helpful, it’s necessary. A few key benefits of proper aftercare:
  • Improves lash retention (meaning better results for longer)
  • Prevents infections or eye irritation
  • Protects the integrity of the natural lashes
  • Reduces the risk of allergic reactions or adhesive breakdown

Essential Lash Extension Aftercare Tips to Share with Clients

Six top aftercare tips you should be telling every client before they leave your salon:

👉 Avoid Water & Steam for the First 24 Hours

Advise clients not to get their lashes wet, including avoiding steam from showers or saunas. This allows the lash adhesive to cure properly.

👉  Clean Lashes Daily—Gently

Many clients think they shouldn’t touch their lashes at all, but daily cleaning with a lash extension-safe cleanser helps prevent build-up and bacteria.

👉  Ditch the Oil-Based Products

Oil breaks down the adhesive bond. Remind clients to avoid oil-based makeup removers, mascaras, and eyeliners.

👉  Don’t Rub, Pick, or Pull

Clients should avoid touching their lashes unnecessarily. Picking or rubbing can lead to premature shedding or damage to their natural lashes.

👉  Sleep Smart

Silk pillowcases and sleeping on your back are ideal for lash lovers. Encourage clients to avoid sleeping face-down to prevent lash distortion.

👉  Provide Written Aftercare Instructions

To ensure clients remember these tips, provide a beautifully designed aftercare card or send a digital version after their appointment. This not only adds a professional touch to your service but also reinforces your brand as a certified lash technician who cares about results.

Pro tip:

Offer a mini “lash care kit” with a gentle foaming cleanser and brush. Not only is it a thoughtful upsell, but it also reinforces your professional image and shows you genuinely care about their results.

  • I understand that we’re not supposed to get our lashes wet after lash extension, but how do I shower or wash my hair during that time?

    • Great question Ash! I recommend my clients to wash their hair before they come, and then wait for 48 hours to wash them again. They can also use dry shampoo to skip washing their hair for a couple of days. With shower, my suggestion is to wash the individual body parts, like a spong bath, if you really need to take a shower, just try taking a quick, cool body-only shower and avoid facing the water. After that initial period, gentle washing is totally fine—just follow proper aftercare!
